Old City Franklin Lantern
In 1964, Klemm Reflector Company was chosen by the Redevelopment Authority of Philadelphia, to reproduce the original lantern designed by Benjamin Franklin, to light the streets of Philadelphia. We manufactured over 400 units to an exacting city specification. The lantern is predominately cast aluminum with a stainless steel cage and hardware and frosted acrylic lenses. In this area, it is the sole source of street lighting. Originally equipped with a 189 watt incandescent lamp, they were later retro-fitted with a 70 watt HPS lamp and ballast.
This installation spawned numerous copies, but ours was the first! Please bear in mind that these photographs are of a 40 year old installation.
